Rifle Week 1 11-29 to 12-03

Dennis has hunted with me for the last 3 years and joined me this year on one of my Kansas Whitetail hunts.  Dennis and I slipped out early the first morning and positioned ourselves in two tree stands located on a heavy willow creek bottom.  With in the first hour we had seen 4 bucks out in a hay field working our way which included this buck.  The deer worked there way towards us playing with a couple of does and slipped right into the danger zone!  Dennis was able to make one clean shot at about 100 yards and dropped the buck in his track.  This 153 inch buck was Dennis’s largest whitetail!  We look forward to him hunting with us again!

Long time friend and client Roy Durbin joined me in Kansas this year as well.  Roy had been in Texas at a conference and flew into Dodge City where I picked him up and took him back out to the ranch.  Roy and I have kidded each other for a long time that he has never had to hunt more then about 45 minutes with me before he filled his tag.  This hunt would fall right in line.  The first evening on the hunt we slipped into place around an old home stead where a lot of deer had been seen.  Within minutes of setting up the deer were on the move and we started seeing bucks right a way.  What we did not realize is that directly below us laid this buck.   30 minutes into the hunt the buck got up and started running off other bucks and dominating the field.  Little did he know that beside me laid a man who has been known to shoot 1 foot moving targets at 1200 yards.  Needless to say Roy added another fine trophy to the wall!

This year I ended up with an additional landowner tag for Kansas.  I knew quickly that Garrett was just the one I wanted to take on a hunt.  Garrett is 13 and this was going to be his very first hunt.  We arrived at camp late one evening and before we hunted I wanted Garrett to have a chance to shoot a new browning lever action 243 that I had brought with me for him to shoot.  We spent about 30 minutes the next morning shooting and I found very quickly that this kid Knew how to shoot!  We met up with Lyle the landowner and started hunting very quickly.  Since we had not started right at day light we decided that we would try and do some spot and stalking.  This tactic had worked well for us during the hunts before and it seemed to be working for us as well.  We seen lots of buck and some nice ones I might add but was never able to get a clean shot at buck standing still.  The first evening we moved into position inside of an old barn where we had been seeing a lot of deer and much to our surprise a large 10 point started out in front of him headed directly to a feeder.  Garrett took aim and took a shot at about 118 yards but did not connect. For two days we spot and stalked seeing deer everywhere and on the third morning Garrett and I slipped into a set of tree stands where Dennis had taken a buck earlier in the week.  As we were getting situated into the tree stand we quickly found deer right under us but they were all does.  Garrett caught movement to his left and soon a 9 point buck was standing broadside 60 yards from the end of Garrett’s rifle.  Garrett took aim and made a great broadside shot and the buck went about 75 yards.  This hunt was featured on an episode of Hunting Lease Magazine in June!  Congrats Garrett

Lyle and I have been working together for the past two years in Kansas.  Lyle is the majority landowner for all of my Kansas hunts and helps guide as well.  Lyle had been telling me about a 170 class whitetail that he had seen just before season.  We hunted hard for this buck during season with QRS clients and all of them had filled there tags and gone home when Lyle and I were watching a small herd of mule deer when we found the monster whitetail being shot at by another hunter.  Fortunately the other hunter missed and Lyle and I set out in hot pursuit.  We had a game plan and started walling deep canyons searching every nook and cranny for the buck.  We spotted a lot of bucks but not the big one.  We were just topping the last draw when I spotted him laying in the sage just about 200 yards from the top of the draw.  We made a plan to stalk him and Lyle set out.  He closed the distance to about 30 yards and waited for the buck to stand.  About 20 minutes in to waiting the buck stood up and Lyle took a shot.  It was a clean miss.  About 10 foot over his back.  The buck took off but made a quick stop at the top of the draw.  Lyle shot just as the buck took off and hit the buck but it seemed that he was hit in the back end.  We searched for days with no results but Lyle never gave up.  On December 23, 23 days after we had shot him Lyle seen a group of Coyotes harassing a deer in the same field we had first seen him in.  It was the buck.  He was still alive but the coyotes had completely eaten the backend out of the buck.  Lyle quickly put an end to the buck and recovered his trophy!  Great Job Lyle!  The buck scored well over 175 B&C
