Rifle Plians Deer 10-24 to 11-4

Guys have you ever wanted your wife just to give hunting a try? Well Sharon Case is a prime example of a wife finally giving in to trying the sport that consume all of her husbands free time. I had the pleasure of taking her on her first guided hunt, for a doe in Eastern Colorado. Well we decided to try to get her doe out of the way first thing. We started around the ranch and only a ¼ mile down the road we spotted two mature doe’s heading towards a small stand of trees. Directly behind those trees was a small but steep hill that provided the perfect vantage point to take a crack at the does. We work around the small hill and came up the backside, and as we crested the hill the does were only about 120 yards below us. I quickly set up the shooting sticks and got Sharon ready. I took a little while to figure out the eye relief of her scope, to get a full image, but as soon as she got that figured out it wasn’t much longer until she cracked off her first shot. That first shot was the only one she would need, as it found its mark directly in the heart tucked right behind the shoulder. For a first time hunter she really rose to the occasion and set the shooting standard extremely high for the week.  Great Job Sharon! And I hope you have the fever now, and hope to see you again out in the woods.

After the completion of his wife’s tag, it was time to turn our attention to finding a Mule Deer buck for Steve Case. It was obvious from the start that Steve was going to be the best kind of hunter to be around, and at the same time hard to keep off the trigger. Steve was hunting Muley’s for the first time, so as we came upon the first buck of the hunt, he was already asking to shoot. The fact that the deer was a young 4x4 I knew we could do better, and simply moved on. The second day started with plenty of does but no sign of bucks. After a bit to eat, we headed back out for the evening hunt, and it did not take long to find a good buck. Unfortunately for us he was on the wrong side of the property fence. Unlike I have ever seen in all my years of guiding, this buck did something amazing, he walked over to the fence and jump over to our property. Dumb founded by what I just seen we started after him. He made over a ridge before we could get a shot at him, so we go it back in the pickup to try to get around him. When we got around to where I thought he would be, he had all but disappeared, until Sharon called out “there he is! He had bedded up in some heavy brush and was only about 130 yards from the truck. Before I could get a word out, Steve had exited the vehicle and was preparing for the shot. The buck had spooked a little and started up the draw, but stopped at about 220 yards and presented a great quarting-away shot. Not wanting to be shown up by his wife, Steve first shot was all he would needs as well, and his first muley buck was the result. Steve and Sharon are the best kind of people to have in camp and I hope to see them both again soon.
